Firm History
Edgar M. Johnson, Jr. began the practice as a sole proprietor in 1973. In 1983, Debbie J. Burgess became a partner, and the firm name was changed to the more recognized Johnson, Burgess & Company. Over the years, the firm has grown steadily and rapidly, and in 2017 the firm name was changed to Johnson, Mizelle, Straub & Murphy.
The firm now employs 7 CPA’s and 13 non-licensed staff to service a continuously growing clientele. Today, with active practices in accounting and auditing, tax planning and preparation, technology consulting and application, and small business consulting, Johnson, Mizelle, Straub & Murphy has evolved into a full-fledged accounting and consulting firm serving the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
Richard B. Mizelle, Jr., CPA
As Managing Partner, Rick specializes in Estate Planning, Business and Personal Tax Preparation, and Small Business Consulting. He graduated from Old Dominion University in 1978 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration, and joined the firm in 1986. Rick recently completed a course of study which qualifies him as a Certified Specialist in Estate Planning. He lives with his family in Martin’s Point.
